Let's talk essentials

Remember the essentials

So, you’ve finally decided to embrace the caravan life. Congratulations! You’re about to join the elite club of people who think towing a house on wheels is the perfect getaway. But before you hitch up and hit the road, let’s talk essentials. A caravan may be your home away from home, but without the right gear, your dream trip could turn into a camping comedy. Here’s a practical guide—with a sprinkle of humour—to make sure you’re equipped to survive (and thrive) on your first caravan expedition.

1. Levelling Blocks

Unless you enjoy sleeping at a 45-degree angle or watching your coffee slide off the table, invest in levelling blocks. Trust me, your back and your beverages will thank you.

2. Water Container and Pump

Caravans don’t come with an endless water supply. A sturdy water container and pump are non-negotiable. Bonus points if you remember to fill it before reaching your remote destination.

3. Electric Hook-Up Cable

This magical orange lifeline connects you to the grid. It powers your fridge, charges your gadgets, and ensures your tea kettle boils faster than your temper.

4. Gas Bottle and Regulator

For those off-grid moments, a gas bottle ensures your stove, heater, and fridge don’t leave you stranded. Pro tip: Check the gas level before departure unless you fancy dining on cold baked beans by flashlight.

5. Chocks and Hitch Lock

Chocks keep your caravan stationary, while a hitch lock keeps it yours. Both are equally important unless you enjoy chasing caravans down hills or explaining theft to your insurance.

6. Portable Toilet Chemicals

Your caravan’s bathroom is a modern marvel, but without the right chemicals, it’s a ticking olfactory time bomb. Stock up unless you want your neighbours glaring at you.

7. Awning and Mallet

The awning is your outdoor living room, and the mallet is its trusty sidekick. Practice setting it up beforehand unless you want an audience of amused campers.

8. Tool Kit and Duct Tape

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong—but not on your watch. A basic toolkit and some duct tape can save your trip (and your sanity).

9. First Aid Kit

For when the mallet misses the peg and finds your thumb.

10. Sense of Humour

Caravan life isn’t perfect, but it’s perfectly adventurous. When things go sideways (literally or figuratively), a good laugh can be your best survival tool.

Now, load up, hitch up, and head out. Adventure awaits, and with this gear, you’ll be ready for anything—even if that “anything” is a flat tire in the rain.

Finally, we would like to hear your opinion regarding the bare essentials you would pack, before going out on your adventure.
