Is plastic the better option?

Choosing the right type of crockery for your caravan is a very personal choice, and can significantly impact your travel experience. When deciding between glass and plastic crockery, several factors must be considered, including durability, weight, safety, and environmental impact. Below, we will explore these aspects to help you make an informed decision.

DURABILITY

Glass is generally more fragile than plastic. While some tempered glass options are available, they are still prone to breakage, especially in a moving vehicle like a caravan. Chips and cracks can develop over time, making them less reliable for long-term use in a travel environment.

Plastic is highly durable and can withstand the bumps and jolts of caravan travel. It is resistant to chipping and breaking making it a safer option for families and frequent travellers.

WEIGHT

Glass is significantly heavier than plastic, which can be a disadvantage when considering the weight capacity of your caravan. The added weight can affect fuel efficiency and the ease of handling when packing and unpacking.

Lightweight plastic is easy to handle and transport, making it ideal for reducing the overall weight load in your caravan.

SAFETY

Although tempered glass is more robust, it can still pose a safety risk if broken, with sharp shards potentially causing injury. Care must be taken when handling and storing glass items to prevent accidents. Consider putting elastic hairbands around glass jars to stop them clanking against each other.

Plastic is generally safer as it does not shatter and is less likely to cause injury if dropped. It is an excellent choice for families with children or for those who prefer a worry-free dining experience. Note that plastic is not impervious to damage, and cracked or broken plastic pieces can also cause some nasty cuts and scratches.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Glass is more environmentally friendly as it is recyclable and can be reused indefinitely without degrading in quality. The manufacturing process for glass is energy-intensive, but is offset by its long lifespan and recyclability.

While some plastics are recyclable, many are not, and can contribute to environmental pollution if not disposed of properly. Consider selecting BPA-free plastics and look for the recycling logo, to help minimize environmental impact.

CONCLUSION

Both glass and plastic crockery have their advantages and disadvantages for caravan use. If you prioritize durability and safety, plastic may be the better choice. If environmental impact and aesthetic appeal are more important, glass could be the way to go. Ultimately, the decision will depend on your specific needs and preferences, as well as the nature of your travels. Melamine or plastic plates and cups are great for casual use, but you may lay down the law for that bottle of Sauvignon Blanc or can of Castle - where only a nicely frosted glass will do, thank-you! Consider a mix of both materials to enjoy the benefits of each, while mitigating their downsides.

NOTE: Melamine crockery cannot be used in the microwave. Look for glass or microwave-safe plastics.
